Types of Logos

There are a number of different types of logos, but let’s go through some of the most common ones:

  1. Wordmark or Logotype

This type of logo consists of a brand name written in a specific style of typography. The design of the typography is intended to be distinct and memorable. This type of logo is popular among businesses that want to emphasize their brand name and make it the focal point of their identity.

    Popular Examples: Coca-Cola, Subway, eBay

2. Lettermark/Monogram Logos

Lettermarks (a.k.a. monogram logos) are typography logos that are made up of the brand’s initials. Lettermarks are a common choice for brands with longer names that want to be more memorable with a shortened version.

Popular Examples: HBO, HP, Louis Vuitton, Victoria’s Secret

3. Pictorial Logo

This type of logo is an illustration or icon that represents the brand. A pictorial mark is an image that directly represents the brand, like a apple with a bite for Apple Inc, or a bird for Twitter.

This type of logo uses shapes and forms that are abstract and not directly representative of the business it represents. An abstract logo is designed to be memorable and distinctive, and doesn't depict anything specific.

Popular Examples: Google Drive, Adidas,Pepsi

5. Mascot Logo

Mascot logos consist of illustrated characters that act as visual representations of a brand. Due to their generally friendly, engaging nature, people tend to naturally resonate and connect with the characters more.

Popular Examples: Mailchimp Monkey, Michelin Man, Colonel Sanders by KFC,

6. Combination Logo

This type of logo is a combination of two or more of the previous types. A combination mark is a logo that combines a wordmark and a pictorial mark or an emblem and a wordmark, a monogram with an abstract logo or whichever combination speaks to you the most. This type of logo is designed to create a dynamic and versatile brand mark.

Popular Examples: Toblerone, Dropbox, Dove, Puma
