Different Font Types
Choosing the right font for your design project is both an art and a science. Of course, you want to choose a font that’s aesthetically pleasing and fits the mood, but it also needs to be appropriate and readable.
Below I will take you through four different font categories and what they stand for.
Serif
Serif typefaces include ‘serifs’ which are a small extention detail at the end of a letter stroke. They are the oldest, most basic fonts in the book. They communicate a level of confidence and elegance for brands that want to look classic, established and trustworthy.
2. Sans Serif
Sans Serifs do not include ‘serifs’. They are simple, clean and modern. When used for a brand logo or supporting materials, a sans-serif font can make the brand appear relatable, contemporary and laid-back.
3. Script
Script fonts are designed to mimic handwriting, cursive and calligraphy. The overall look and feel of each script font can range from fancy and sophisticated to trendy and relaxed. Sript fonts can be used really effectively for headings, accent phrases, logos and other short text.
4. Display
Display or decorative fonts are mainly intended for titles and accents. They can include custom graphic elements to further elevate the design. As they are so expressive and unique, these kinds of fonts can communicate a really specific feeling.
